A fantastic Norwegian landscape painter, Balke was mainly famous for his romantic and charming views that most of us have adopted towards the Norwegian landscape today. Though most of his works are absolutely wonderful, his most famous works tend to be a little anti-climactic and typical for this era (which seems contradictory, given how epic they are). However, the ones I really love I chose below – there is a very different appeal and approach to these images that stray from what he is really known for (which is closer to the first image provided).
Some of them are simply unfinished, the others stray along a more surreal and abstract or graphic representation of the landscape. But, it is this rawness that really draws me to it.
