Ralph Caldecott

Went to the wonderful Legion on Honor a few days ago, where they had this great (albeit tiny and ill-placed) exhibit on the history of children’s books. This is where I found Randolph Caldecott, and his fantastic woodcut prints. I’m taking relief printing this semester, so I have a great appreciation for the delicacy of this medium. Everything is so fragile, so to get such amazing detail and color in all these prints really impressive. Not to mention his illustrative sense of story telling – some of these are pretty hilarious (in a charming sort of way….!).

This one is a lithograph, but still equally quaint.
